Preliminary results
1. Fieldwork survey
As a result of these researches, performed on transects
oriented West - East, in the area of Balta Ialomiţei, it was
identified archaeological inventory in 5 different areas, attributed
chronologically to Iron Age, Middle ages and, possibly, Roman
period.
2. Archaeological sondage
In the field campaign 2012, it was performed the
archaeological sondage S I East, with the aim of recording and
analyzing of the overall anthropic sequence of the tell settlement
Borduşani Popină. The archaeological inventory was collected
and examined by the microstratigraphic method, being culturally
assigned, on the basis of relative chronology.
On the southern profile of the section, 16
micromorphological samples were taken, 12 bulk samples for
sedimentological and chemical analysis, and 8 samples (of which 7
bones and one wood fragment) for radiocarbon dating.
Preliminary results
- stratigraphic recording, in order to analyze in detail a
delimiting structure of the settlement, attributed to the Iron Age
(La Tène) occupation;
- analyzing the complete Chalcolithic sequence and
preliminary dating of the chrono-cultural levels (Boian and
Gumelniţa);
- systematic sampling of the stratigraphic profile.
3. Sedimentological coring
In the campaign of 2012, were conducted 18 deep
sedimentological corings, using a mechanical percussion system,
generally at a depth of 10 meters. Five of these were made in
order to ensure a continuous sampling, in undisturbed column,
necessary firstly for micromorphological and palynological
analyzes.
Bulk samples were taken from each sedimentary unit, for
grainsize, chemistry and mineralogy analyzes. A total of 100
samples were analyzed for particle size by laser method and
measured for magnetic susceptibility. In addition, 12 samples of
clay mineralogy were analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Were taken
over 100 palynological samples that are prepared to be analyzed.
Also, there have been carried out 2.5 meters deep small
corings, with a soil auger, in three different situations:
- areas likely to correspond to temporary or seasonal
habitation, where they were discovered archaeologic materials by
fieldwork researches;
- areas likely to correspond to temporary or seasonal
occupations, given the local geomorphologic conditions (higher
areas, in the proximity of water resources);
- zone assumed that would have been an access way in
the Roman period ("snails road").
Preliminary results
- identifying erosion remnants (the island in Bentul Mare
lake) of lacustrine sedimentary areas (Japșa located in the eastern
proximity of Popina, Sâltava area), some important alluvial
sedimentation areas (island in Bentul Mic lake, Ostrovul Borcea);
- absence of habitation in this area, although presumed;
- systematic sampling for sedimentological and
palynological analyses and radiocarbon dating.
